(031987) Butts, Mary. The Crystal Cabinet: My Childhood At Salterns. Boston, MA: Beacon Press, 1988. 1st Thus. Hardcover. 8vo. 296 pages. Fine in Very Good DJ. B&W Photographs. DJ lightly rubbed. Foreword by Camilla Bagg; afterword by Barbara Wagstaff. May Butts (1890-1937) was a recognized poet, essayist, novelist, and short-story writer during the 1920s and 30s, but was never accepted by the literary establishment at the time. This book is her swansong. Published in 1937, it is the last book she wrote and in it she attempted to give her own view of the first twenty-two years of her life and of the images and forces that shaped her vision. Unfortunately, Butts' dream of telling her side of the story was never realized. After her death and before publication of the book, her literary executor removed portions of the book that may have reflected unfavorably on the Butts family. Here for the first time is Butts' story as she intended it, restored to its original form by her daughter, Camilla Bagg ISBN: 0807070386 (Authors)
